What's in a Dream?

A dream is a series of images, thoughts and feelings. Each of us is expected to experience about two hours of dreams each night. However, some dreamers consider their dreams to be longer than this.

Theories of the function of dreams

In the last two centuries of existence, a number of dream theories have been developed. These theories are based on the belief that dreams are the manifestations of the brain, which is a psychological phenomenon that takes place during the REM stage of sleep.

At this point, the unconscious brain is busy processing memories. It results in a stream of memories that is able to flow through the conscious portion and brain. This theory is often referred to the continuous activation theory.

Another theory, referred to as the"stimulus response" theory acknowledges the fact that dreams are a form of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams represent dreams that do not meet in reality.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreams are used for evolutionary reasons. When you are in the REM stage of sleep the amygdala, which is a component within the fight-orflight area of the brain, triggers similar for a survival situation. This would have conferred the evolutionary benefit of prepping the body for potentially dangerous incidents.

REM stage

REM or rapid eye movement, is one of the main goals in the realm of sleep. During this twilight state brain uses the vast majority of its capacity by revising the characteristics it's never learned during its daily activities. One example is the male sexifier. The REM region is also the location of many of the top brainwaves in today, including more esoteric ones. The most famous REM-bound inhabitants include insomniacs and depression types. Latent content

What is visible and intangible content in dreams is a subject of debate. Freud claimed that both are inextricably connected. He also compared dreams with an Iceberg. There's a part of an iceberg that can be visible above the water and the other is hidden under the surface.

Freud believed that there were three parts to the mind. Minds that are conscious constitute the high point while the unconscious mind and latent mind are at the bottom. They believed the most effective way to glimpse the unconscious was by way of dreams.

There are two types of dreams' content: manifest and latent. This latter type includes the actual content of dreams and the significance of it. In most cases, it's an amalgamation of fragments of memory and a set of symbolic events. In the theory of physics one could translate the content that is visible into the latent.

Freud's Axiom

Sigmund Freud's idea of dreaming is that dreams are wish-fulfilling. This means that all people are neurotic. Furthermore, Freud stated that dreams do not exist, but they're a way to substitute for reality.

The content of a dream is divided into two parts both the visible and the latent. It is the manifest that is what is the real content. While it is the latent part in the dreams. The content that is manifest arises as a result of information processing. The hidden content is hidden desires and other forms of hallucination.

There are four strategies that hide the latent dream. These are decryption, displacement of the dream, transference and disguise. The first one is displacement. This happens when a lucid dreamer substitutes elements of his or their dream with the same elements of the thoughts in their dreams. It's a result of the weakness of the sleeping brain.
