Is it a Dream?

Having a dream is the repetition of thoughts, images and emotions. Each one of us is believed to have about two hours of dreams each night. However, there are some who believe their dreams to be longer than this.

Theories of the functions of dreams

In the last two centuries, a variety of dream theories have been developed. These theories are based upon the idea that dreams are the manifestations of the brain, which is a psychological phenomenon that occurs during the REM phase of sleep.

In this phase, the conscious part of the brain is working hard to process memory. The result is a stream of memory stored that travels through the conscious part within the brain. This theory is often referred to the continual activation theory.

Another one, called the stimulant response theory acknowledges the fact that dreams are a type of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams represent desires that do not come to fruition in the real world.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreams serve as evolutionary purposes. During the REM phase of sleep, the amygdala(a part of the section known as the fight or flight part of the brain, triggers similar as it does during a situation of survival. This might have brought about an evolutionary advantage in preparing our bodies for potentially dangerous incidents.

Stage REM

The term REM (or rapid eye) movement, is the most popular term for those who sleep. During this twilight state where the brain makes vast majority of its capacity by returning to the traits it's not yet learned in the daytime. One example is the gender sexifier. At this time, Octavet is in its peak at this point, making it an ideal time to be around your significant other.

The REM area is also the location of many of the more notable brainwaves during today, including more esoteric ones. The most well-known people who reside in REM comprise insomniacs and those with depression. An interesting study finds that those with depression tend to sleep more often and for longer lengths of time. This may be due to a mixture of reasons, with the most obvious being they are an adolescent child.

Nightmares

To experience nightmares can be terrifying experience. The majority of them are accompanied by other unpleasant feelings. They may be present infrequently, or over a long period of time. They could also be triggered by stress or trauma. In certain cases they could be associated with medical conditions.

One of the first steps to control your nightmares , is to understand how they work. The dream subject can be influenced by a various factors, such as the mood of the dreamer as well as the topic of a prior dream, stories, and the other events on the horizon of the dreamer's.

In some instances an individual can modify the content of a dream, which includes the outcome. It can be done in a variety ways however the most commonly used method is to recreate a revised version of the nightmare prior to going to sleep.

Latent content

The question of whether there is obvious and undiscovered content within dreams is the subject of debate. Freud claimed that both are inextricably linked. He also compared dreams with an Iceberg. There's a part of the iceberg , which can be observed above the water and the part that is hidden under the surface.

Freud believed that there are three distinct parts to the mind. It is the conscious brain that's at the top of the iceberg, while the unconscious and latent mind are at the bottom. His belief was that the best method to look into the subconscious was through dreams.

There are two types of dreams' content: latent and manifest. The latter category includes the actual content of the dream along with the significance of it. Sometimes, it's just a combination of memory fragments along with a sequence of symbolic events. In theory, it's feasible to transform this manifest information into latent.

Freud's Axiom

Sigmund Freud's principle about dreams is that dreams are wish-fulfilling. This means that all people are neurotic. Furthermore, Freud stated that dreams are not real, and they're a way to substitute for reality.

The content of a dream can be divided into two segments of the dream - the actual and the latent. The manifest portion is an actual dream content, and in the latent, it's the hallucinatory part within the dream. The content that is manifest arises as a result of information processing. Latent content can be described as hidden desires as well as different forms of hallucination.

There are four mechanisms to hide the latent dream. These are decryption, displacement concealment, transference, and decryption. The first is displacement. It occurs when a person who is dreaming transforms elements of dreams with similar components in the dream-thoughts. It's due to the weakness of the sleep brain.
