What's the definition of a Dream?

A dream is the collection of images, thoughts and feelings. Each of us is expected to experience about two hours of dreams each at night. Some dreamers believe that their dreams are longer than this.

Theories about the purpose of dreams

In the last two centuries, many different theories about dreams have been proposed. These theories are based on the idea that dreams are the manifestations from the brain. a psychological phenomenon that occurs in the REM stage of sleep.

In this phase, the unconscious brain is busy processing the memory. This results in a data stream of memories that flows through the conscious part and brain. This theory is often referred as the continuous activation theory.

Another theory, called the stimulation response theory acknowledges the existence of dreams as a type of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams represent wants that aren't met on a daily basis.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreams are used for evolutionary reasons. In the REM stage of sleep, the amygdala, which forms a portion from the fight-orflight portion of the brainis firing similarly to during a survival threat. This would have been the evolutionary benefit of preparing the human body to face potentially harmful events.

REM stage

REM, also known as rapid eye movement is the word to use when it comes to sleeping.
