What's in a Dream?

Dreaming is the sequence of thoughts, images, and emotions. Every person is expected to have about two hours of dreams each night. Some dreamers believe their dreams to be longer than this.

Theories about the function of dreams

In the past two centuries of existence, a number of dream theories have been developed. These theories stem from the belief that dreams are manifestations that occur in the brain a psychological process that takes place during the REM phase of sleep.

During this time, an unconscious part of the brain is busy processing memories. This results in a data stream from the memory stores that is able to flow through the conscious portion of our brain. This is known as the theory of continual activation.

Another one, called the stimulus response theory, acknowledges the reality that dreams are a form of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams express desires that do not come to fruition in actual life.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreaming serves an evolutionary purpose. In the REM stage of sleep, the amygdalawhich is part which is located in the brain's fight-orflight section the brain, triggers similar as it does during a situation of survival. This may have had the evolutionary advantage of preparing the human body for potentially dangerous events.

REM stage

REM, also known as rapid-eye movement, is the term used to describe the process in the realm of sleep. When you're in a twilight phase brain uses the largest use of its capabilities by learning new skills that it didn't learn in its waking hours. For instance, the male sexifier. During this time, the Octavet's levels are at their highest as well as the most ideal time to be around your significant other.

The REM area is also the location of many of the most prominent brainwaves that occur throughout our time, not just the more esoteric ones. The most notable REM-bound occupants include insomniacs and depressed types. Incredibly, a study from the past indicates that people with depression tend to stay asleep more often and for longer durations of time. This is due to a mix of reasons, with the most obvious being that they have an adolescent.

Nightmares

The experience of having nightmares can be a frightening experience. They're often accompanied by other unpleasant emotions. They can take place infrequently as well as regularly. They can also be caused by anxiety or trauma. In certain cases they may even be caused by medical conditions.

One of the first steps to control your nightmares , is to understand how they function. The dream subject can be affected by a number of factors, including what the dreamer's mood is and the subject of the previous dream, the news, and even other events within the dreamer's world.

In some instances the dreamer has the ability to actively alter the contents of a dream, including its outcome. It can be done in many ways and a popular method is to rehearse a rewritten version of the nightmare before falling asleep.

Latent content

The question of whether there is manifest and latent content in dreams is the subject of debate. Freud declared that the two are connected. Freud also related dreams to an iceberg. There's one part of the iceberg that can be observed above the water but the remainder is hidden under the surface.

Freud believed that there were three components to the mind. In the mind of conscious, it is the highest point of the pyramid, while the unconscious and the latent mind are at the lowest. In his opinion, the most effective way to glimpse the unconscious was through dreams.

There are two types that dream-related content can be found: latent and manifest. The latter is the actual content of the dream as well as the significance behind it. Sometimes, it's just made up of memory fragments and a set of symbolic events. In theory, it is possible to translate what is manifest into latent.

Freud's axiom

Sigmund Freud's belief about dreaming is that dreams represent wish-fulfillment. This means that all people are neurotic. Additionally, Freud stated that dreams do not exist, but that they represent a substitute for reality.

The dream's content is divided into two components which are the manifest and latent. The manifest portion is an actual dream content, and there is a hallucinatory aspect which is dream-like. The content that is manifest is the result of information processing. The hidden contents are desires as well as different forms of hallucination.

There are four mechanisms to mask the dream. They are decryption, displacement of the dream, transference and disguise. The first is displacement. The process occurs when the dreamer alters elements of his dreams with similar aspects of their dream in the thought-thoughts. It's a result of the weak control of the brain that sleeps.
